When it comes to classic puzzle games, Dr. Mario has – and will always be – one of the greats. Nintendo's franchise dates back to the days of NES, and all the while the series has continued, but never strayed too far from the main formula fans have grown to love. Arrange falling pills as the slowly drift to the bottom of the screen, form horizontal or vertical lines of like colors, and eliminate viruses in the process to clear the stage; it really doesn't get much simpler than that in concept. At the same time, Dr. Mario has always had a deceptively difficult edge to it, as players go head-to-head to try their skills against friends, and deal with never-ending cascades of colored capsules. As far as classic puzzlers go, there aren't too many that can top Mario's unique pill-popping experience.
The franchise lands on WiiWare under the name Dr. Mario Online Rx, and while online is an obvious focus for this 1,000 point ($10) download, players who dig into the experience a bit more – and bring a few friends along as well – will find that there's a lot to offer in Wii's premiere first party Nintendo WiiWare offering. Not only does Dr. Mario have the polish we'd expect from Nintendo (kudos go to developer Arika for making that happen), but it's also coming in at way under maximum WiiWare size, so those of you that – like us – are currently infuriated with Nintendo's lack of mass storage device support should be able to find room in the 'fridge' for this 93 block chunk of puzzle goodness. That puts it slightly higher than games like A Link to the Past on Virtual Console, and way under titles like Lost Winds or Star Soldier R.

In reality, Dr. Mario Online Rx is really two very different games, each with their own high points and limitations, but despite which side of the software you call home, the core offering is still going to deliver. The main draw is of course the classic mode, which comes complete with online, but you may find yourself getting hooked on the new Virus Buster mode like we did, as it offers a totally different experience.

Dr Mario Wad

You kick off your initial session by creating a Mii profile, and then can play either Dr. Mario or Virus Buster from the main screen. Dr. Mario gives you the main single or two player mode, a quick tutorial, ranking section where you can see worldwide win/loss record and individual main game scores, and of course the online Nintendo WFC section. Online is basic, but it works great. Simply connect, hit up the worldwide matches in either regular or flash mode (flash is the same as basic Dr. Mario, but you only need to remove the blinking viruses to win, so there's a bit more strategy in how you eliminate sections), and go. Everyone starts at 5,000 for their ranking number, and based on wins or losses you gain or lose points just like Mario Kart.
Why online is only a one-on-one affair is beyond us though, and that's certainly a bit of a letdown. In fact, the entire Dr. Mario (not Virus Buster) experience is two players only, and that's a shame. Four player is no new concept for Dr. Mario, so we're confused to see it removed from the plumber's latest package. With that being said, the core Dr. Mario experience is as good as you'd expect it to be, having varied difficulty levels, game speed, songs, and options for either regular (marathon), vs. play, or flash mode.
On the opposite side of the fence sits Virus Buster, and this may in fact be our favorite part of the package despite our original expectations. This IR-focused mode is four player co-op, and really bends the rules of Dr. Mario in a great way. Multiple pills spawn at the top of the screen, and the simple grab/rotate controls allow you to move the pills freely left, right, or down (up is still locked, since this is

a gravity-based puzzler at its core) to position the pieces. This time around though, you'll have four players, each with their own agenda, each fighting over what piece to use where. It's chaos.
To add to the strategy though, all combo blocks that fall after an initial four chain is made will fall at a much slower pace, so if you have half-pills that hang over edges (very common in Dr. Mario), you can now grab and move those for a little aftertouch control as they drift to the bottom. You can also click on the pills in the 'next' box at the top of the screen to rotate them, so it's very common to have one person manning the main strategy, one person watching the extra blocks after combos, and someone else arranging the rotation of upcoming blocks. We've dubbed this mode the 'Zen Dr. Mario' mode in IGN LA, as you need all players to act with one conscious mind to truly rock at Virus Buster, and when you do it's an extremely rewarding experience. It's not uncommon to just burst out laughing at the way things line up when playing with the same teammates over and over again, and the feeling you get when things just 'click' as a team is really rewarding. What an innovative and inspired mode.
The graphical and audio fronts are a bit less impressive with Nintendo's first WiiWare title, but they get the job done. Classic midi tracks of previous Dr. Mario mixes are used, and both music and sound effects return with slight tweaks, but the same basic core. Visuals are simple and almost entirely 2D (which explains the small space taken by the channel), but the classic charm and well used Mii integration makes it enjoyable on the eyes, while still very basic. It's a bit odd that you're switching between horizontal and pointer modes with the Wii-mote depending on which game type you're playing, but given then different styles of both Dr. Mario and Virus Buster the actual gameplay changes make sense.
