'Easy to learn, hard to master.' This phrase is used to describe many things, especially in gaming. I can think of few titles that exemplify this more than Defense of the Ancients 2 (Dota 2). This free-to-play, multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game tasks you with selecting one of 111 playable Heroes to take to the battlefield, utilizing the character's unique abilities, play style, and attributes to help your team achieve victory. Dota 2 lacks Paragon's graphical flair, and doesn't have Smite's many unique play modes, but it is the best and most balanced MOBA on PC.

Combat Structure
Dota 2 places you in a team of five to battle another five-person squad on an asymmetrical, three-dimensional map. The two teams, Radiant and Dire, each have a base of operations called a stronghold where they spawn at the start of the match, or after teleporting back to base to recover lost health and mana at their team-specific fountain. Characters also respawn there when they die in battle—more on that in a bit.

Strongholds are located on opposite ends of a map and are connected by three lanes. Each lane has a series of towers protecting the strongholds at the end. Your team must work together to push lanes and destroy the opposing team's towers and Ancient (a structure within your stronghold), while protecting your own.

Creeping Through Lanes
Farming, the act of gathering gold and level-boosting experience points, is an essential part of the Dota 2 experience. To do so, your team kills enemy Creeps, non-player character (NPC) units that spawn from strongholds and battle their way toward your stronghold. Destroying Creeps has an equally important, secondary benefit: It weakens the enemy's defense. You see, Creeps absorb damage from your defense towers and Ancients, so it's vital to eliminate them as soon as possible.

On the flipside, it's crucial to keep your team's Creeps in front of you to soak up incoming damage, as towers attack Creeps before turning their attentions to Heroes. That said, if you hit an enemy Hero in the range of a tower, the tower will attack you even if Creeps are present. This creates an array of interesting strategies. A basic strategy is to force the enemy to leave a lane, but damaging them just enough so that the team is scared to engage in combat. Then, help your Creeps advance the lane until they get in range to attack the tower.

In addition to Creeps, there is the jungle. League of Legends and Smite players are familiar with this concept. This is the space between the lanes where Creeps do not venture. Heroes farm in the jungle by attacking camps, locations where special Neutral Creeps reside. These units are harder to kill than regular Creeps, and do more damage to Heroes, but they drop more experience and gold. Unlike Creeps, jungle enemies are not aligned with either side. Neutral Creeps attack anyone who attacks them, and can be claimed by either side.

While definitely the most difficult approach, Hero kills are a great way to farm, as they drop the most gold and experience. Killing enemy heroes also knocks rivals out of the match for the duration of their spawn time.

Note: Assists count just as much as kills, so players are rewarded for helping bring down an enemy.

Prepare for Battle
Dota 2 has numerous items for tailoring your Hero to your liking. You spend gold on item combinations to improve your hero's stats, while potentially gaining special bonuses linked to specific items. The Manta Style item, for example, has an active Mirror Image ability that creates two images of your Hero that last for 20 seconds. For melee characters, these images deal 33 percent of your current damage output, and take damage equal to 350 percent of your health and armor. For ranged characters, Mirror Image deals 28 percent damage and takes 400 percent damage. This is on top of the stat boosts that it awards, too. With over 130 items, it can be daunting for new players to figure out the items to use with their Heroes, but Dota 2, like Smite and League of Legends, has a useful Suggested Items section to guide you along. As a result, two people can play the same character in different fashions.

The team with gold advantage is the team with access to more items, and the team with access to more items has the advantage in direct conflict. To offset that, Heroes need to shrink the gold deficit. This means taking risks by venturing into the jungle and avoiding team fights in order to get gold and experience from minions in their lane. It forces a team to play defensively, limiting its options.

Gold can also be used by players killed in battle to instantly respawn, instead of waiting the usual recovery period. Respawn time is connected to the game clock. The longer the match goes, the longer the respawn time. The longer the respawn time, the more expensive it is to buy instant respawn. Gold is very important, so much so that it is an item, in a sense. Knowing when to spend gold to spawn back immediately is key. Doing so at the right time can save a team from being in a disadvantaged position or even allow a team to punish an overaggressive enemy team that's pushing forward because of an assumed advantage. Doing so at the wrong time costs players gold and nets them no benefit.

Dota Dojo
Of all the MOBAs that utilize an isometric view, Dota 2 has the highest skill gap. There are more micro-decisions that you make in a match in League of Legends—and Dota 2 is far less forgiving. But have no fear, there are tutorials here. Newcomers will find that Dota 2's tutorial does a good job of preparing them for battling other people.

The entire tutorial is a game in itself. It starts with one-on-one battles against an AI-controlled opponent, and progresses to 5-vs.-5 fights with nine bots that stand in for real people. Finally, you play in real 5-against-5 matches with other newcomers, while you continue to hone your skills and gain the MOBA experience that only comes with time. You're rewarded with prizes for completing the tutorial, including a book that fleshes out the Dota 2 lore and the entire Gunslinger set. Even after finishing the tutorial, you will find that Dota 2 does a solid job with its matchmaking, as it pairs new players with other new players. Admittedly, the tutorial takes a long time to complete, which people with MOBA experience may find tedious.

Modes of War
Dota 2 has many games for players to choose from, but they all play exactly the same. The difference between the modes is the Hero selection. For example, All Pick gives you access to any of the Heroes currently in the game—it's the mode to select if you want to master a specific character. You pick in the order you appear in the lobby, and the order in which players appear is random. It is first come, first served, and you have one minute to make a selection. There is even the option of choosing to have a random hero selected for you to play. Doing this nets you a bonus 250 starting gold.

All other core modes place limits on the Heroes you can select. Single Draft offers three randomly picked Heroes, with each Hero representing one of the three hero attributes: Strength, Agility, and Intelligence. Random Draft gives plays a pool of 20 randomly picked characters to choose from. Least Played limits you to choosing from infrequently used characters. All Random is just as chaotic as its name suggests, as you're assigned a random Hero. I have no idea why anyone would play this mode other than to occasionally spice things up.

Captain's Mode is the competitive way to play Dota 2. This mode picks two players to serve as captains. One represents the Radiant team, the other represents the Dire team. The captains alternate between banning five Heroes and selecting five Heroes. If they know their opponents, which is the case in a tournament setting, wise captains ban characters the other team excels at using. This is where strategy, character knowledge, and team composition really come into play.

Captain's Mode is great when playing with a five-person squad. It's a struggle when you do solo matchmaking and don't communicate with teammates. This is because captains are randomly determined. Without communication and knowledge, a captain can sabotage his or her own team from the jump. All the things that are required to play Dota 2 are even more crucial in this mode. When it works, it is amazing. When it does not, it is frustrating.

Dota 2 also has All Random Deathmatch, a mode in which you receive random Heroes after respawning. The first team to destroy the Ancient, or to reach 45 kills to exhaust their opponents' 40 respawns, wins the match. Event game modes, such as Diretide and Wraith-Night, also feature deviation from the core MOBA gameplay. These modes are meant for fun and are usually tied to a seasonal celebration or competitive event. Players also have the option of setting up Private Lobbies with customized rules.

Open Your Wallet
Dota 2 is completely free to play. In fact, the game's store consists, primarily, of cosmetic items used to customize characters. Prices vary, but you can expect to spend $3.99 to get a Hero set that includes a loading image and individual parts of a character skin. While I prefer Smite's assortment of skins, Dota 2 does a fine job. Dota 2 also has the annual International Battle Pass, which works in a similar fashion to Smites' annual Season Ticket. For $9.99, you get access to exclusive rewards, such as exclusive terrain and music packs.

There are also many items to unlock simply by playing the game. Those who level up their profile get rewards with each rank up. Items randomly drop after matches, too. Like Smite and Paragon, Dota 2 lacks pay-to-win items, which levels the playing field.

The Intangibles
I was surprised by the amazing voice acting in Dota 2. The characters sound unique and memorable, which makes me wish the franchise had more established lore. In fact, you must do a lot of reading outside to get the full backstory. This is a common issue I have found in MOBAs, but Smite handles it well.

Equally pleasing is the Dota 2 interface; it's eye-catching, and well organized. Newcomers won't take long to get accustomed to it, making finding what they need before or during a match quite simple.

Tools of the Trade
Dota 2's minimum and recommended system requirements are low enough that people with non-gaming rigs should be able to play the game without worry. You can download Dota 2 for free via Steam on Windows, Mac OS X, and Ubuntu (Linux). I've successfully played Dota 2 on Windows 10- and Ubuntu 16.04-powered machines.

The requirements ask for 4GB of RAM, but I have played the game without issue on an older laptop that contained only 2GB of RAM. Dota 2 provides players with graphical settings to further optimize the game to run on their current rig. For example, things like Animate Portrait (which lets your hero's portrait move and speak) and Ambient Occlusion (which adds shadow effects) can be toggled on or off.

Dota 2 is designed to be played on keyboard and mouse. While I was able to get partial gamepad functionality with some tinkering, it is not worth the effort and will have a drastic negative impact on your in-game performance.

The Original
Dota 2 is the MOBA for MOBA fans, as the game's core gameplay is the standard by which rivals measure themselves. While I prefer Smite's third-person combat approach, Dota 2's core gameplay is without issue. Dota 2 is in a league of its own, and the skill ceiling is the highest of any other isometric MOBA similar to it, exceeding even the mega-popular League of Legends. If you are considering getting into traditional MOBAs, you would be mistaken to pass up this gem.
