Your instructional permit is considered Stage 1 of the Arizona Graduated Driver License program and requires a minimum of 30 hours of supervised behind-the-wheel practice, 10 of which must be nighttime supervised driving. Arizona GDL Laws
Arizona, like most states, has their own set of Graduated Driver Licensing law for teen drivers under the age of 18. This is done because a number of documented studies have indicated that youthful drivers can benefit from the education and experience required by a graduated licensing program. Known as the Class G license in Arizona, it has three stages:
Stage 1: Instructional Permit Stage
A new driver must be at least 15 years and 6 months old to apply for an instructional permit. The licensee must hold the permit for a minimum of 6 months. During this period, the licensee must complete 30 hours of supervised driving â€' 10 of which should be at nighttime.
Stage 2: Restricted/Probationary Stage (Class G in Arizona)
Before applying for a restricted/probationary license, the driver must be at least 16 years old. The nighttime driving restriction for a restricted license holder is not being allowed to drive between the hours of midnight to 5 AM. For the first 6 months, the licensee is only allowed to have one passenger 18 years of age or older. If the teen driver has no outstanding extensions of the restricted driving period or suspension of driving privileges during the completion of the first six months of restricted driving, the teen may drive without restriction until eligible to apply for a Class D driver license beginning at age 18.
Stage 3: Full License Stage (Class D in Arizona)
In order to get a full license in Arizona for unrestricted driving, the applicant must be at least 18 years old. During the Instructional Permit stage, the licensee must be accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years of age at all times.
